Ann Arbor's Mayor Declares February 8, 2008 "Follies Day"
Elizabeth K. B. Smith
Issue date: 2/4/08 Section: Humor
In recognition of the 22nd annual Ross Follies production the mayor of Ann Arbor, Hon. John Hieftje, has declared Friday, February 8, 2008 "Follies Day." Follies director, Christian Santiago, first approached the mayor's office two weeks ago to ask that February 8, 2008 be declared "Follies Day" in honor of the 22nd anniversary. Santiago claimed that the mayor's office was "extremely easy to work with; I just emailed them to ask if they would approve our proclamation and they said 'yes.'"
Although Santiago found the mayor's office to be helpful in pushing this legislation forward, it did spend some time in committee undergoing revisions. "It's 'Follies Day'," claimed Santiago. "We wanted the proclamation to be funny, after all." While the mayor's office did approve the majority of the original text, a representative for the mayor's office suggested that some paragraphs were more appropriate "as part of a roast, or emcees' speech and not as part of a proclamation issued by the City." After a few revisions, the mayor signed and sealed the official proclamation of "Follies Day" reproduced below.
