Issue date: 1/28/08 Section: Features
Smart, witty, and uncontrollably engaging, "Juno" is a wonderful coming-of-age romantic comedy that focuses on the issue of teenage pregnancy. Although dull at first, the film progressively gravitate you toward the characters and eventually make you fall in love with the story. Throughout the entire plot, the film "Juno" has captured the essence of both parental care and romantic love within the life of a troubled teenage girl.
To briefly describe the plot, Juno MacGuff is a sixteen year old high school girl who desperately seeks help as she realized her own pregnancy. After considering abortion, Juno abandoned the idea and decides to put up her child in adoption. With the support of her blue-collar father, Juno found a couple named Vanessa (played by Jennifer Garner) and Mark Loring, who is willingly able and ready to adopt the unborn child. But just when things were going the right way, the story gets complicated as Vanessa and Mark divorced.
Acting portrayed by newcomer Ellen Page (Juno) was star-turning performance. Throughout the story, she was able to embody a rebellious teenage girl who stayed strong through her pregnancy. Her brilliant performance along with a strong supporting cast truly enabled "Juno" to capture the complex reality of husband and wife, parents and pregnant daughters, and the genuine nature of motherhood.
Though classified as comedy, "Juno" is a film packed with a powerful meaning that gave its audience something to think about. Overall, this teenage comedy is smart, charming, and definitely worth your time.
