In this day and age many people question the relevance of Dr. King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech. In the business realm, corporations trumpet diversity initiatives and seem to have universally accepted the vision that "diverse" employees help deliver more value. At Ross we meet people from different cultures who hold a variety of beliefs; and ideally, we learn to appreciate them as valuable parts of each other's learning experience.

Nevertheless, the dream of Dr. King is not complete, and it continues to need our help to see it through to fruition. In recent years, programs benefiting the less fortunate across the United States have come under attack, and the gap between the "haves" and the "have-nots" continues to grow. Diversity initiatives are being cut in the corporate world and on the local government level, as referendums - such as Michigan's Proposal 2, which passed last year - create setbacks in the fight for equality across the United States.

Dr. King dreamed that everyone in America be judged on the content of their character; and we, as future business leaders, can work to make sure that his dream comes true. By continuing to be champions for diversity in times of adversity, we can help to keep Dr. King's dream alive for future generations.
