Greetings from your new SGA Board! We are incredibly excited to serve you in the coming year. There has been a short period of transition and we appreciate your patience as we are now in full swing. We have already begun scoping out initiatives and projects for our term; however, we would first like to reflect on the SGA contributions of this past year.Did you know that SGA..

Allocated over $100,000 to clubs and school-wide activities this academic year

Worked with facilities to provide breakfast in the basement on the weekdays, including bagels on Monday morning

Assembled a career taskforce working with OCD to optimize the fall recruiting schedule for Fall 2008

Collaborated with the Office of Student Life (OSL) to organize the first annual Club Celebration and Awards Dinner on March 6th to toast all of the clubs at Ross

Reorganized the BBA election process to increase efficacy of each elected position

Represented the interests of Ross at various university-wide meetings, including taskforces with Vice Provost Theresa Sullivan

More recently, SGA worked with the Michigan Ticket Office to resolve our football ticketing "crisis". Unfortunately, there was no room for negotiation on the loss of partner tickets since the stadium will be losing over 1,500 seats this fall due to expansion and handicap compliance. On the other hand, we are happy to report that the ticketing office reverted back to the previous seating priority. This win early in our term was quite exciting!

With regards to initiatives, our board will be focusing on stronger communication between the administration and students. We will keep you posted on everything that is going on around campus. To start, let's address some common inquiries and concerns.

How do I reach out to OCD?

The first way to ask questions or raise concerns is through your OCD section reps. Your section reps meet with OCD regularly to present class concerns - so utilize them to get your voice heard! It is two-way communication. You can also email ocd@umich.edu, Al Cotrone (Director of Career Development and Student Affairs) or Lisa Hurst (Senior Associate Director of Career Services) directly. Among other OCD developments,?Tony Tsai recently moved to a new opportunity on U-M campus; however, OCD has just finished interviewing for his successor and will also be hiring two additional counselors for the fall.

Why is wireless so spotty?

Computing Services has reassured us that the building is fully connected. Wireless problems may be due to incompatible wireless cards or other laptop specifications. If you are having any trouble with your laptop connectivity, please visit the 2nd floor of Kresge Library. Tech support should be able to assist you with any of your problems. If tech support is unable to resolve your issue, they are instructed to bring it up with the administration for resolution.

There is never a study room available.

As part of Ross is currently under construction, it is frustrating that private study space is limited. The administration has priority on study rooms for official school usage, and then students are able to reserve on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students can sign up for a time slot up to one week in advance. Each reservation can be made for up to three hours and must be spaced apart by more than two hours. If you need to reserve a room on a specific time and date, please logon to MyiMpact seven days prior. In consideration of your classmates, please cancel your room if you no longer need it. Also, please be aware that showing up more than 30 minutes past the reservation time will result in cancellation of the reservation.

Why isn't there hot breakfast during the weekdays?

The Operations Department has reviewed this request over and over again throughout the years. Student surveys have been performed and, at one point, there was hot breakfast served. However, the actual number of people buying hot breakfasts during the weekdays was not nearly enough to justify the expense. We all fantasize about having fluffy scrambled eggs and bacon breakfasts in the morning, but the numbers show more of us would rather catch up on sleep. Currently, breakfast sandwiches are available in the refrigerator in the café and only a few are sold every morning. FYI: the breakfast sandwiches are made fresh daily, as are all the items in the café and cafeteria. Yes, those salads, sandwiches, yummy parfaits and sinful cookies are all made fresh in the wee hours in our very own Ross kitchen.

Why isn't the café open on Saturday?

The Operations Department has also reviewed this request on several occasions. Faculty members have actually spent random Saturdays literally counting how many people there are in school; it is a ghost town. Fridays and Saturdays are pretty much our "days off" and filled with our activities, so it makes sense. Again, the demand does not justify having the café open for an entire eight hour shift.

Why can't I get a Diet Coke in the café or cafeteria?

Coke products were previously available on Ross campus, but were removed in early 2006 because the University found credible evidence that Coca-Cola was not abiding by the U-M Vendor Code of Conduct. (Specifically, Coca-Cola's overseas operations in Colombia and India were questionable.) All Coke products were removed from campus at that time. An independent, third-party investigation was started and recently completed, concluding that there were no pesticides used in the products in India. In January 2008, the University announced that it will continue its relationship with Coca-Cola. You can read more about it here: http://www.ur.umich.edu/0708/Jan21_08/08.shtml. As of now, we are still awaiting the official go-ahead from the University.
