AE: Daniel Bernard Roumain Presents Dream Deeply
Stephanie Elder
Issue date: 3/30/09 Section: Features
Thursday morning the Davidson Winter Garden served a unique function: a performance space for Arts Enterprise speaker Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) on the third day of his four day residency at the University, which included two performances for the re-opening of the University of Michigan Museum of Art, a concert/rave at the Union featuring DJ Scientific, a master class and panel discussion at Stamps Auditorium, and Thursday's workshop at Ross, "'Dreaming Deeply', Self-Leadership for Young Professional." He also visited several Ann Arbor elementary schools to perform and speak and worked with various School of Music, Theatre, and Dance Departments during his stay.
As the sounds of a rock anthem version of the Star-Spangled Banner filled the air, students looked around curiously for the source, only to see DBR, on classical violin, passionately playing on the staircase. The workshop that followed, attended by around 20 BBA, MBA, and other University students, focused on identifying the parallels between Daniel's story as a musician and entrepreneur and the paths and goals of business students today.
DBR graduated from the University of Michigan with a PhD in Composition and Theory, but has since gone on to found DBR MUSIC PRODUCTIONS, a production company based in New York City. He challenged attendees to think about their legacy: who they are and where they come from, what do they do, and what they intend to leave behind. He discussed relevance, with an emphasis on innovation and originality as the key to standing out from others with similar backgrounds. He moved around the classroom, introducing himself to individuals and asking for their story, stressing that the first pitch and handshake, telling a story to make someone believe in you, is crucial to success regardless of field, as an artist or businessman, and that appearances absolutely count, referencing his own unique presentation. DBR's philosophy that everything is a performance bears particular significance to Ross students concerned with interviews and presentations, where the power to convince an audience depends directly on one's ability to deliver ideas at the right time with confidence and consistency.
DBR's engaging personality and upfront interactions with audience members made the workshop both enjoyable and extremely beneficial, and introduced a new perspective to the business community, one of Arts Enterprise's goals, as well as presented the story of an individual who has achieved both financial success and self-fulfillment through carefully defined goals, a plan of action, and a positive, open-minded attitude.
